How to properly sign an Air Waybill

Hello All

after continously discussing with customers and banks, I would like to know how an Air Waybill is correctly signed.

The addition “Carrier” on the front page of an airway bill
hence is necessary, need however not be repeated in the signature box if
already printed in the letterhead.

In my understanding:

Case 1:

Box "issued by": Freight Forwarder XYZ in a capacity as contracting carrier

Box "Issuing Carrier's Agent Name and City": empty

Box "Agent's IATA Code": empty

Box Signature of shipper or his agent: Forwarder XYZ

Box Signature of issuing Carrier or his agent: Forwarder XYZ

--> without mentioning "as carrier"!!!! The above quote in my opinion clearly says it is not necessary, but why is then so often requested by the bank? Besides that, the box itself is named "signature of the issuing carrier or its agent". Checking the "issued by" box, one should come to the conclusion the signatory IS the issuing carrier.......

Case 2:

The box "issued by" is showing Freight Forwarder XYZ only, then I agree that the signatory must be named "Freight Forwarder XYZ as carrier".

Case 3:

Box "issued by": Airline ABC

Signature: Freight Forwarder XYZ as agent for the carrier --> correct?

OR: "as agent for the carrier ABC"?

Thank you all in advance for your comments!

AWB signing

Your observations under Cases 1 & 2 are correct, and under Case 3, the 2nd option is the correct one.

Agree with Abrar

My idea is the same with Abrar !

How to properly sign an Air Waybill

Hello Abrar an Ntahai

thanks for your help. 9 of 10 banks usually accept either case 1 or case 2, but lately I always seem to catch that 1 bank that's insisting on adding "as carrier" next to the signature....... (in order to verify that the carrier has issued the Air Waybill. What do those guys believe who issued the AWB?! It's ALWAYS the forwarder acting as contracting carrier who's issuing the AWB!)

Incredible that the so called "Uniform" rules are always laid out differently!!!
