Program strategic management process address program related issues and are of much higher level work compared to project management processes that are of detailed work.
There are a total of 47 processes that address program issues and these processes primarily address coordination of the outputs of the various projects within the program.
All processes need not be applied to all program. The program manager, along with the program management team decides on which processes are applicable for the program.
While each of the 47 program management process has its own inputs and outputs, there are a number of inputs and outputs that are common to all processes.
Inputs that are common to all processes include: Assumptions, Constraints, Historical Information, Organizational Process Assets.
Outputs that are common to all processes include: Lessons Learned, Supporting Details, Information Requests, Program Management Plan updates
Program Status reports and Performance reports can appear as common inputs or common outputs depending on the situation and process.
Assumptions are factors considered real, certain or true at a particular point. There may be external circumstances or events that must occur for the program to be successful. If it is believed these external events are likely to happen, then you have an assumption.
Assumptions carry a degree of risk because of the "known to be true now" aspect.
Example of an assumption for a pharmaceutical company's new drug program could be that the new drug will have the desired effect in terms of cure.
